About Me

Welcome to my blog!

I am an aspiring picture book author. I have not been published -- YET. But, I LOVE writing. And someday before my children grow too old to appreciate picture books, I plan on being published. My blog will focus on:
  • exercises to improve my writing craft
  • summaries of publishers and agents
  • inspirational quotes and words, and
  • writing and book-related news

Why picture books?

I love the challenge of being creative. I don't think of myself as a particularly creative person. In fact, I am strongly left brained -- which is probably why being creative is so exciting to me. I am good at math. I was a spelling champ in grade school. I was an average English student -- horrible at processing symbolism and mediocre at writing essays. But, somewhere along the line, I grew to love creative writing.

I love, love, LOVE words. Wordplay is especially fun for me. And, I find enormous satisfaction in finding just the right word.  I get inspired by the sound of words and the way they roll off my tongue.

As a kid, I would lug home a shopping bag full of picture books from the library, tear through them, and then return the next week for another round. But I forgot this love until I was reading hundreds of picture books over and over again to my children. Though painful at times, it gave me the time and excuse to, as an adult, appreciate each and every word and enjoy how the illustrations changed the meanings.

Finally, I love the idea of having a tangible, finished product that is my own (with the help of my critique group, agent-to-be, and editors, of course).

Welcome again! I hope you will find my blog as valuable as it will be to me.

  2. Thanks Carmela! And thank you so much for your blog -- one thing I love about writing is the community that shares so much of their own knowledge and learning to help others become better writers themselves. :-)
